White privilege is an invisible force that has been unconsciously enjoyed by many for decades while very seldomly recognized by those who benefit from it.  This fireside chat with Rich Homberg covers a wide span of issues from media, Detroit and the state of the world post George Floyd.  Rich and Hajj are excited about having an uncomfortable conversation around social injustice and the narrative of Black America and the media.  Marshall McLuhan in 1964 coined the well-known phrase “the medium is the message” meaning that the media not the content should be the focus.  They talk about the role of media and storytelling.  Most people don’t understand how the media works, Rich will provide powerful insight on how to use the power of the media for good.

About The Speaker

Rich Homberg

As President and CEO of Detroit Public Television (DPTV), Rich Homberg oversees one of the largest public television stations in the country, a position he has held since 2008. He is widely considered one of the most dynamic innovators in public media, who has propelled DPTV to new heights of local engagement, community partnership, content and public service. Under Rich’s guidance, the station has been at the forefront of a new generation of local journalism, establishing an active and growing editorial hub in Midtown Detroit; launching and expanding the weekly “One Detroit” news show, which features on-location, community-based reports; and serving as a lead partner in the Detroit Journalism Cooperative. It has also become an authoritative voice in environmental coverage, through its Great Lakes Now bureau, and in arts coverage through its Detroit Performs platform. The station’s 50+ year commitment to American Black Journal expanded its footprint in 2020 by partnering with Bridge Detroit, a non-profit journalism start-up that serves Detroit residents with local news and information. At Detroit Public Television, Homberg oversees five television channel – including the main channel (56.1/WTVS), a new 24/7 Detroit PBS Kids Channel, the Michigan Learning Channel, the Create Channel and World Channel, as well as related online platforms and WRCJ 90.9, the city’s only jazz and classical radio station. DPTV’s broadcasts reach over 2 million people each week, with another 500,000 visiting its digital and social media channel and 200,000 tuning into WRCJ.
