Imagine Black Culture Without Detroit

The U.S. population is over 331 million people, black people in America make up less than 14% of the population.  Imagine American Culture without black people.  In many regards American Culture is Black Culture.  The music, the clothes, the style, the creativity and art are influenced and inspired by Black Americans.   Detroit helped found the middle class, the soul of Black Culture has Detroit’s fingerprints all over it. During this fireside chat with Alicia Jeffreys, SVP of Marketing at Detroit Pistons, the discussion will focus on the NBA restart, the City of Detroit, how the Pistons are impacting the black community during the pandemic and the connection between Black Culture and Detroit.  We will discuss the role that sports play when the world is shut down.

About The Speaker

Alicia Jeffreys

Alicia Jeffreys is a Michigan native, born and raised in Flint. She credits growing up in Flint, MI for her love of basketball where it was a staple during her childhood and guided her trajectory into the sports world. She graduated with a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Sports Management and Communications from the University of Michigan. Alicia has spent all of her post-graduate career working with Pistons Sports & Entertainment serving in marketing and branding capacities for Arena Football, the WNBA’s Detroit Shock and NBA’s Detroit Pistons. During her career she has helped execute logistics for 1 NBA and 3 WNBA Championships and over the years has launched several brand campaigns into the market. Heading into her 19th year with the franchise, Alicia is currently the Senior Vice President of Marketing for the Detroit Pistons where she is charged with guiding branding efforts for the Creative and Communications department that includes Advertising and Promotions, Digital and Social Marketing, Programming and Productions, Creative Design and Community & Social Responsibility. She is focused on strategic planning around the revamping of the Detroit Pistons brand and embracing the 313.
